Britain is one city region - London! So invest in success?
The relevance and implications of city region policy in the UK have been hotly debated at recent IED conferences and are not universally agreed even although cities continue to drive the post-industrial economy. Most of the speakers at the 2007 conference recognised the dominance of London in terms of policy making, knowledge economy, iconic national developments and increasingly labour market needs. Now the Centre for Cities suggests RDAs must do more to reap the benefits of London's success. Trade could be enhanced by better transport links or a more strategic approach towards building economic ties.London imports more that £100bn in goods and services from other regions every year and in doing so supports many jobs in other regions.
London's global strength is vital to the British economy and the capital needs infrastructural investment to maintain its success.
So has economic development no role in counterbalancing the problems caused by London as capital of one of the most centralised states in Europe even after ten years of "devolution" which has yet to produce the claimed economic dividend?
Even devolution has gone further and worked best in London!
